When a handsome con artist accidentally falls in love with the girl he is trying to con, he decides to do everything in his power to protect her from his notorious boss, Kathryn Miller, who wants to see her dead. But will his power alone be enough against Manhattan's most dangerous female? Will his strengths have to include murder? These are things Vincent Reid must now decide. At it's root, the story is about one man's fight for freedom against an older woman who has not only controlled his body, but also his mind for the last eleven years. I always love it when authors seek me out personally to review their books; Its both an honor and a pleasure to have someone trust me with something so deeply personal, that I know that they have sunk their blood sweat and tears into and want my opinion on their work. This book took me a little bit longer to read than usual as I just haven't had the time I usually have to just pour myself into a book, every spare moment of my time has been devoted to spending time with my family when I am not working so I have been using my lunch breaks at work to catch up on my reviews. Vincent has know Kathryn Miller since she picked him up off the street eleven years ago, when he came to New York in search for his missing sister. Since then Vincent has belonged to Kathryn in every way imaginable body, mind and soul, her hold on him complete she has made him not only a wealthy man and an intricate part of her business but he has also become her whore to some of the most important woman in Manhattan. Wanting to break free of her hold on him his newest invention maybe the only way to break free from her, but the price he has to pay for his freedom will come at a cost that Vincent in not capable of accepting. Alex Fielding did a great job IMO portraying the angst and desperation that Vincent feels when, he realizes that he is in love with Chantelle and that he can't use her for Kathryn's plans. From the moment he realizes this every thought, action he takes is to spare the girl he loves from the hail storm of fury that Kathryn is about to unleash on them. Nobody that Vincent loves is safe from the fury and vengeance that is Kathryn Miller. This book had a lot of action throughout it, and the characters remained quite interesting throughout. There is a lot of sex scenes peppered through out the book but they aren't terribly graphic, but they are also not really appropriate for under sixteen either. Fielding did a great job with this story it has a little bit for everyone action/adventure, love/deceit and a desperate game of cat and mouse that will keep readers turning the pages. I gave this book a 3.5 out of 5 star rating I was gifted a reviewers copy in exchange for an honest review by the author. Publisher: Three Clover Press (February 1, 2013) Category:VietnamWar,Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller Tour Dates: March 2014 Available in: Print and ebook 384 Pages In this suspense thriller set during the Vietnam War, Victor Ortega is a rogue CIA agent, and he needs someone to blame for his crimes. Recon Marine Ethan Card is the perfect patsy. As a teen, Ethan ran with a Chicago street gang, and he has a criminal record. He also has a secret lover, Tuyen, who is half Vietnamese and half French. Tuyen is a stunning, beautiful Viet Cong resistance fighter. Since she was a young child, Tuyen has lived under the control of her brutal, older, sexually abusive half-brother, Giap, a ruthless and powerful Viet Cong leader, who has forced her to kill Americans in battle or die if she refuses. When Ethan discovers he is going to be court marshaled for weapons he did not sell to the Viet Cong and Tuyen will be arrested and end up in an infamous South Vietnamese prison, where she will be tortured and raped, he hijacks a U.S. Army helicopter and flees with Tuyen across Southeast Asia while struggling to prove his innocence. Victor Ortega and Giap—working together with the support of an unwitting American general—will stop at nothing to catch the two, and the hunt is on. The star-crossed lovers travel across Laos to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat; to Bangkok, Thailand, and then to Burma’s Golden Triangle where Ethan and Tuyen face a ruthless drug lord and his gang. In the rainforests of Burma, Ethan also discovers Ortega and Giap have set in motion a massive assault on his Marine unit’s remote base in South Vietnam with the goal of killing the man he admires most, Colonel Edward Price, who is the only one who believes Ethan is innocent. Ethan must risk everything to save Price and his fellow Marines. Will he succeed? In this suspense thriller we follow Ethan Card, a Recon Marine fighting during the Vietnam war as he tries to vindicate himself, after he is wrongfully accused of selling weapons to the enemy by rogue CIA agent Victor Ortega. His past makes him the perfect mark and his affair with Tuyen a Vietnam resistance fighter is icing on the cake. Ethan hijacks a plane and we follow him as he is stalked by Ortega,Tuyen's half brother Giap and his band of mercenaries as they try to eliminate him as a problem. This book is action driven and extremely graphic in its violence. Giap and Ortega are methodical and deadly, both of them have a long reach, with many contacts through out the region. It is both intriguing and disturbing the depth of hatred and possession Giap feels towards his half sister, as he fantasizes about rapping her and torturing her lover. Ortega is driven by violence and power and will stop at nothing to bring down Ethan card no matter how many men it cost him. The story started and ran full out, with action and intrigue but I found myself distracted and a little bored thorough the middle while Ethan was recovering. I wasn't impressed with the addition of Angel to the scene what started off as sweet quickly became disturbing when he develops a sexual relationship with a girl of no more than 14. I was completely disgusted by that and it almost turned me off from the rest of the book. The action however quickly picks back up and continues until the very last moments when our hero saves the girl he loves. I will be honest while there are parts of this book that I enjoyed there were parts that I had a hard time getting past. The author did a great job in his writing, given the nature of the subject I don't think the the violence was gratuitous given the subject matter but I did question some of the roles of woman placed in this book as either someone to bed, or someone to exercise power over and torture. As an American I would have though Ethan would have been more morally apposed to bedding a 14 yr old child as it would be considered statutory rape in his country. It was hard to swallow. I would not recommend this book to anyone under the age of 18 yrs because of the graphic violence and sex throughout. I gave this book a 3.5 out of 5 star rating. Life has gone stale on Jim, an expat working in Catamarca. Everything is predictable until he meets Lisa. She has the starry eyes, the sensuous lips, and the tango steps that make all rational assumptions go away. Jim gives her top marks for animation but there is a flashing beacon at the end of his tip sheet: Danger. Lisa is a little too intense, a little too crazy, a woman with too many scenes playing in her head. That doesn’t faze Santos, a curandero looking for a medium to channel the spirits of the dead and attract his lost sister. He lures Lisa to his compound in northern Argentina, where she becomes a pawn in a deadly family feud. Jim goes in search of Lisa. Tracking her down turns into a double mission — delivering Lisa from her captors and himself from the confining routine of his life. It takes a fantastic journey through rugged back country for Jim to realize how much he loves Lisa. The story unfolds against the background of a country in the grip of a military junta. It is a place where kidnapping, violence, and death no longer make headlines, a place where you learn survival skills. Headgames by Erika
Rummel Headgames is a fictional story set in Toronto with 4 main characters who are each known to one another each with a connection to the main character Lisa. Lisa is an eccentric, misguided and naive head case who ensnares the unsuspecting with her beauty and charisma but cannot keep herself out of trouble because she can't live outside of the stories in her head. Lisa is on a one-way course to a life consumed with drugs and prostitution because of her nievete'. Her single-mindedness to find a biological father in Catamarca leads her to a life tied to 3 men who each have their own goals and intentions for Lisa. Lisa's journey from Toronto to Catamarca is the highlight of the book. The characters have solid foundations and keep you interested in the plot. The ending of the book was all tied up a little too nicely for my liking, and led me to feel a little let down and wishing for a different outcome. For this reason I give this book a 3 of 5 star rating. ~Di I was gifted am e-copy of Head Games in exchange for an unbiased review as part of the Head Games virtual book tour Publisher: Sunbury Press (March 2013) Category: Hollywood Crime Caper, Action/Adventure, Thriller, Literary ISBN-13: 978-1620062050 Tour Date: October, 2013 Available in: Print and ebook, 239 Pages Tinseltown Riff centers on Ben Prine, a thirty-something Hollywood screenwriter who, on a Labor Day weekend, finds himself in desperate straits. Latching on to a dubious last-minute opportunity, he unwittingly embarks on a collision course with a Montana tracker connected with a Vegas mob; an odyssey which culminates in a showdown on an abandoned Western movie set. I will be honest it took me a really long time to get into this book and it almost made the didn’t finish pile, but hating to give up on a book I persevered and it did get better. I enjoyed the writing style although at the beginning I really had no idea what the heck was going on as there were too many characters introduced at one time, and I had no idea how they all tied in together and where it was all going, which left me a little frustrated hence my having a hard time getting into the book. This book is filled with quirky eccentric characters all of them down and out looking for a way to drag it all together and make it big in Hollywood, and they all need Ben to pull it together, the only problem is he hasn’t a clue what’s going on until its well into play. I gave this book a 3 out of 5 star rating I was gifted a reviewers copy in exchange for an unbiased review as apart of the Tinseltown Riff tour. ~Kathy~ Publisher: Crime Wave Press (March 8, 2013) Category: Action/Adventure, Mystery/Thriller/Suspense, Crime Thriller Tour Date: Mid May- Mid June, 2013 Available in: Print & eBook, 380 pages Working Tokyo nightclubs is easy money for beautiful and troubled American Val Benson - until a client with a rather unusual hobby - painting the private parts of his female liaisons - reluctantly gives up a map to a stash of Japanese war loot and tempts his favorite girl into a dangerous treasure hunt. The Congressman's daughter is not the only one interested in the map: yakuza, bent cops, human traffickers, rogue CIA agents and her father are hot on her trail, snapping at her high heels. So begins the dark, epic journey of a new anti-hero of Asian Noir, a protagonist both ambiguous and courageous, and utterly unreliable. From comfort women and tomb-raiding in Japanese-occupied Burma to the murderous echoes of the Vietnam War, long forgotten crimes come roaring back to life, as Val leaves a trail of destruction and chaos in her wake. Together with her best friend, the equally unreliable nightclub hostess Suki, Val travels through Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok to the Thai-Burmese borderlands for a dramatic showdown with her pursuers. Finding the treasure before everyone else does is her only hope for survival, and perhaps redemption. Once again this is not my normal genre of book that I typically read, but I like to try new things so of course I gave it ago. The main character Val is a booze drinking, cigarette smoking, cocaine snorting, runaway basically she runs away from everyone and everything that is important to her, she blames her father for her brothers death and her mothers unstable mental health, but like most kids has no problem spending his money she just doesn't want to talk to him or have anything to do with him. Her antics lead her to Japan and into the home of her ex boyfriend Charlie. Val ends up working at the Cowboy club which is an exclusive night club for rich men who want to drink with pretty girls. Enter the painter and his entourage he enjoys Val's company and offers to paint her, and invites her to his house so he can do just that. And here's where the adventure begins and chaos ensues, I don't want to give any spoilers but it hits the fan. I went kind of back and forth with this book at times I was riveted and couldn't put the book down and other parts I was just kind of meeeh I get a little impatient so when the action was just starting to get good and then the timeline changed I had trouble going from exciting drama to back story of the painter. There is quite a bit of history hiding in plain sight here which I found interesting, and gave me a lot to think about. Overall I enjoyed the book and I would recommend Gaijin Cowgirl. The 2,000-plus-mile trail winds through 14 states, stretching along the east coast of the United States, from Georgia to Maine. It snakes through some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes in North America, as well as through some of its most poverty-stricken and primitive backwoods areas. With his offbeat sensibility, his eye for the absurd, and his laugh-out-loud sense of humour, Bryson recounts his confrontations with nature at its most uncompromising over his five-month journey. This book is laugh out loud funny! This is an adventure of a guy and his notion to discover and hike the whole Appalachian Trail beginning to end. This book is for anyone who hikes, has hiked or knows about hiking and the grand notions of discovering a trail you haven’t conquered yet. Every hiker has ideas of what goes into the backpack and what are the staple meal items you pack for ease and weight in transport. You will not be bored by some of the meal conundrums that befall these two characters and what they have to eat or not eat, what is considered too much weight and what is considered sacred especially climbing mountain ridges with all the weight of your pack on your back. Some of the funniest moments come from the secondary character in the book who is an alcoholic and is looking to dry out and going through his own emotional roller coaster, separate but also at the same time as one who is on a private emotional roller coaster that comes from within while climbing and working towards your next goal along the trail. This book was very easy to identify with. I laughed so hard at times that my husband decided that he needed to read the book to find out what was so funny. Great anecdotes, funny stories, tough internal transformations and all with a lighthearted view of adventure. I give this book a 5 star rating. |
Reviewers : Kathy & DiKathy :I love to read. I learned to read at a really early age and was never without something to read growing up. Reading is a cheap easy vacation, when you can become so engrossed in what you are reading that you can see, smell, hear and taste everything in your minds eye. I'm just a ordinary girl living life one page at a time. Archives
